Aconitum

(Monkshood)

4 ft. tall monkshood blooms in midsummer, reblooming in late fall. Ours is dark blue/purple and looks good in a border. Sun to light shade. Zone 4 (3 if protected)

 

Ajuga (Bugleweeds)
Tough creeping ground cover for bold blue massed color in spring.  Looks good with hostas, may crowd out some plants.  Trim with weed whacker after bloom  to make neat and have rebloom. Will grow where other plants do poorly.  Attractive foliage sun or shade Zone 3

 

Anise Hyssop (agastache)

 

Long Blooming, Bottlebrush, Lavender blue, fragrant flowers.  

Used for flavoring in baking

It blooms in early summer and will rebloom if severely cut back after blooming. Perhaps you might put it in front of a white rose with rose salvia in front of it.   Zone 3

 
Coral Bells (Huechera)  

Fireworks ignite the border when planted in a mass. Soft coral flowers over bronze ruffled foliage make a wonderful contrast for an edging, groundcover, or border front. Humming birds like these long season bloomers.. Protect coral bells in winter where snow cover is uncertain.  They like rich, moist soil and will tolerate some light shade. Zone 3

Silver Scroll's mounds of bronze-veined foliage with metallic overlays make this a breathing foliage accent.  These late sprint to midsummer 24" show slender stalks of white flowers. They are a favorite with humming birds like them. Silver Scroll Coral Bells are ideal as an edging for walks and perennial gardens.  Protect coral bells in winter where snow cover is uncertain.  They like rich, moist soil and partial shade.. Zone 3

Delphinium 

Pacific Giant 'Astolat': The most dramatic of the Pacific Giants, with flowers in shades of lavender to pink.  Attractive with tall bearded iris, foxgloves, and peonies.

 
A six to ten foot striking accent plant well worth the extra effort of staking. Blooms early to mid summer. Plant in back border with perennial sunflowers.  Cut back after flowering for re-bloom. They grow best in rich, slightly alkaline garden soil. They are attractive with pink lavatera, false sunflowers and phlox. They like sun (but will tolerate some shade) . Do not crowd; space 24 inches apart. Delphiniums do best and are longest lived in zones 3 & 4

Double Snowflake's airy flower sprays are ideal for flower arrangements, fresh or dried.  Baby's Breath provides a softening effect for bold colors or large flowers and is attractive with liatris, phlox, coneflowers, and monkshood. Blooms all summer. Needs well-drained, alkaline soil. Zone 3.  May need winter mulching in an exposed area.

Hollyhock
These old-fashioned flowers bloom mid-summer to fall in many colors. Height: 2 feet. Full sun and deep, rich soil.  Self-sows. Needs wind protection or staking, except Queeny. Zone 4

 

Hosta, several varieties
We have cultivars from 8 to 36 inches several different colors of foliage Likes shade, rich, moist soil.  Blooms in summer.  Try them on a shady bank or a woodland path or as an edging for a shrub or wildflower garden.  They are also useful beneath trees and as foundation plants on the shady side of buildings, hedges, or high fences.  Looks good intermixed with ferns and astilbes, or white swan cornflowers. Zone 3

Jacobs Ladder (Polemonium)    
Long blooming, firm stems with clusters of bright blue half inch flower cups with orange stamens. An excellent blue spot in the border, 30 inches tall Will bloom late spring and early summer Likes sun but will do well with light shade Zone 4

 

Joe-Pye Weed (Queen of the Meadow) Eupatorium      
   This plant likes good soil that is evenly moist.  At 6 feet it is a back of the border plant.  Large purple flowers Blooms late summer into fall Likes sun  Zone 3

 

Liatris (Gay feather) (Blazing Star)
Bloom from later summer to early fall with purple pink flowers. May reach 5 feet tall. Looks good with monk hood. Moist, well-drained soil. Needs no fertilizer Excellent butterfly attraction Sun or light shade Zone 3


Lilies    
Lilies are among the most beloved of all garden perennials. An entire border can be created using these beautiful plants. Apply only a small amount of fertilizer each spring. May need to be staked We have a choice of several species with many different colors and bloom times Lilies like full sun and a neutral to slightly acid soil that never becomes waterlogged Zone 3

Nearly every garden has a place for delightfully fragrant, old-fashioned lily-of-the-valley. They will grow under trees.  They like plenty of moisture and rich, slightly acid soil. Does will mixed with Japanese Spurge (pachysandra) as a ground cover. Zone 2


Lupines (Russell Hybrids)
Bloom early to mid-summer in many colors and bi-colors. Plants are up to 3 feet tall. They enjoy the cool dewy nights of Maine but are never happy in a wet spot Plant two feet apart in full sun. By picking and not allowing them to set seed when they bloom in early summer you may get a second bloom Lupines can be invasive, choking out native plants. All parts of the plants are poisonous. Please don't let them escape your yard. Zone 4

Vine like in growth with golden blooms and yellow leaves all summer Plant 6 inches apart. Grows 2 to 3 inches tall A groundcover that prefers sun and moist soil Zone 3


Mauritanean Malva (High Mallow)
Bears lots of striking fuchsia saucer-shaped flowers with dark veins Give this large plant (about 3' across and 4' high) plenty of room as a focal point in your garden. Self rows vigorously Zone 3


Monarda (bee balms or bergamots)
Bee Balm provides a bright spot of color in a border. The leaves have a minty scent, and hummingbirds are enticed by the tubular flowers that bloom for most of the summer. Colors range from white and lavender-pink to clear pink and bright red Cut back the plants after blooming Zone 3


Oenothera (Sundrops-sunset Boulevard)
Striking orange flowers mature to apricot/red, open all day, dark green leaves, 24 inches tall Blooms in summer. Pairs well with catmint Likes well-drained moderately fertile soil in full sun Zone 4

Japanese Spurge has masses of white flowers atop glossy, dark green foliage in early summer.  It is prized as a groundcover on shady banks, along woodland paths, and under trees where other plants won't grow. Needs moist, well-drained, slightly acid soil. 6 - 10 inches tall. Zone 4 or 5


Peonies
Peonies come in red, pink, white, and in-between. In addition to the large fragrant blooms the shrub-like foliage, up to three feel high and wide, looks attractive until fall They make nice focal points, serve as attractive low hedges, and are good foundation plants in areas where woody shrubs may suffer from the weight of heavy snow
In moist fertile soil these plants will be enjoyed by you and your grandchildren
They prefer full sun though will take some late afternoon shade Zone 3
 

 

Phlox

Cut Flower

Deep green, lance shaped foliage. Flowers are fragrant and showy, with brilliant non-fading colors. Height: 2 - 3' Sun or partial shade, rich, well drained soil. Zone 3 - 8

Perennial Black-eyed Susans bloom midsummer to early fall.  The 4 to 5 inch blooms on 3-foot plants make a glorious display that attracts butterflies. Goldsturm was the 1999 Perennial Plant of the year. Likes sun, but will tolerate some shade.  It adapts well to dry or moist fertile soil. zone 3
